After an extensive break I started writing and recording new songs at the end of 2015’s summer. Not planning anything, I ended up with a full dozen songs by early 2016 that went together very well as an album.
I kept recording what was to become two EPs, released in 2017 and 2018, respectively; by that time I felt that the new songs were much stronger production-wise. So I kept the first album, ‘Make Me Do’, under wraps to be remastered, even partly re-recorded later on.
Lately, I’ve come to appreciate the uniqueness of this album and the total lack of reason to re-do anything with it, rather take it as a statement in its own right that is quite perfect in its own way (not that anything I ever do would be anything close to what commonly is referred to as ‘perfect’, but that’s not what I would ever want. A little imperfection goes a long way in making things — and people, for that matter! — interesting).
So, here it is! I hope you enjoy listening to ‘Make Me Do’ as much as I did recording it.
Side note: The instrument tagged as ‘Menosynth’ (e. g. the solos in ‘Time Out’ and ‘A Dog Named Blaire’) is not an actual single instrument, rather a very specific setup with a few sound generators (sampler, sample player, synth) patched through some effect processors that are mounted together to a portable (well, more or less portable) 19″ rack cabinet.
All music & lyrics, instruments & vocals, recording & production: Babu Menos, except the rap interlude in ‘When Mom was Young’ which contains eight bars from ‘The Death of Åse’ (‘Peer Gynt Suite’ Act III) by Edvard Grieg.
